UnRestroom is an image-based, open source, crowdsourced archive of restroom signs.

I started this platform in 2023 with designer Jaya Dharmarajan after we observed that toilets, or the lack of them, are often sites of gender, caste and class-based discrimination. Restroom signs indicate who gets access to safe sanitation, and how bodies are perceived and constructed. Signs, and with them, restrooms, often perpetuate ableist and transphobic ideas that bodies and birth assignment define who we are and where we belong.

Through the act of documentation, we aim to map change in representation and accessibility over time. Our collection dates back to 1961, is home to images from across the world and exists to start conversations about the impact of binary visuals and the action needed for a more inclusive world.
