I started Tasveer with Aryaman Jain in my last year of high school. We began as a student-run collective that offered free photography and cinematography services to NGOs in Mumbai. Within months, more than 80 students from across 4 cities in India joined Tasveer to participate in and actively document community-driven work taking place around them.
I developed partnerships with 31 local, national and international social initiatives, such as United Way of Mumbai, World For All, Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Society, Robin Hood Army and a UNICEF Affiliate, Nine is Mine. I continued to actively photograph the work of NGOs based in Mumbai.
I conceptualised and taught a year-long photography course for secondary school students at Project Dhai Akshar, an NGO based in Versova, Mumbai. During these sessions, we’d pick a composition technique and go practice it on a photo-walk. We’ve kept in touch through photography all these years in the form of a group called Versowalks. It’s what it sounds like: we walk around Versova and make photos, continuing a tradition of witnessing each other and the locality we grew up in change through this craft.
